Portsmouth’s Parks and Countryside team and its volunteers are celebrating its success in winning a prestigious ‘Green Flag’ for Hilsea Lines. This award is presented to the best managed country parks in the Country, and this is the second year running the Lines have been recognized.
The award is a national scheme managed by a consortium of organisations, Keep Britain Tidy, BTCV and Green Space. The site was visited in May by a panel of judges looking for exceptional standards in categories such as ‘Community Involvement’ and ‘Clean and well maintained’.

One of the Green Flag judges commented that “This Park is clearly a well managed and maintained park, which the people of Portsmouth should be proud of”.
Peter Roberts, Hilsea Lines Ranger “Hilsea Lines is an oasis of calm in an otherwise urban environment. An area for quite relaxation, picnics or play intermingled with wildlife and history. The Green Flag is in recognition of all the hard work that volunteers and staff have undertaken to make it a wonderful place to visit”.
Cllr Hunt, Cabinet member for culture and leisure, said “This award highlights the commitment we have to the preservation of quality green space and to the recognition of its benefits to the health and well-being to the wildlife and people of Portsmouth. All of our sites rely heavily on volunteers to do much of the practical work. My thanks go to them for helping to maintain the site to such a high standard.”
